The Easy Legacy?

It’s a common sentiment among older generations to reflect on their past struggles with faith and perceive them as more arduous or challenging than those faced by the younger generation. But is that truly an accurate comparison? Can we really measure the severity of someone else’s journey? The truth is, we can’t. Only God and the individual know the true weight of their tribulations. While it’s natural for people to feel their experiences are unique or particularly difficult, we must remember that no one’s struggle is exactly the same as another’s.

The Lord calls each of us from different backgrounds, placing us in distinct circumstances that shape our journey in unique ways. These differences mean that the challenges faced by one generation can’t be fairly compared to those of another. What might feel like a struggle to one person could be a lesson in growth for someone else. We are each entrusted with a path designed for us, with trials that stretch our faith and character in ways only God fully understands.

So, why do we see so many young people struggling in their faith or straying from it? One fundamental reason is the lack of a personal testimony. Your testimony—the unique story of how you came to know and love the Lord—is the foundation of your spiritual life. It is what fuels your relationship with God. When you’ve experienced hardship and witnessed the Lord’s hand in your life, your faith grows deeper, more rooted, and more resilient.

For those who have benefited from the faith and sacrifices of others—whether parents, mentors, or the previous generation—it can sometimes be hard to understand the depth of those sacrifices. If you’ve grown up in a home where faith is nurtured and you’ve never faced the same struggles or persecutions as your forebears, it can be difficult to appreciate the hardships that were endured to create that environment of faith.

In a similar way, those who have reaped the rewards of another’s toil, like the fruit of someone else’s labor, often do not know the extent of the sacrifices made. The young people who inherit a strong spiritual legacy from their parents or community may not fully understand the difficulties and spiritual battles their elders fought to pass that faith down.

This doesn’t diminish the reality of their own challenges or struggles, but it does illustrate the importance of forging a personal testimony. Faith must be experienced firsthand. We are all called to face trials, whether big or small, that help refine our character and draw us closer to God. The challenges we face are not random; they are opportunities for growth, for deepening our reliance on God, and for strengthening our resolve to follow Him.

In the end, no one is qualified to belittle or judge the struggles of another. Every person’s path is different, and God is intimately aware of the journey each of us is walking. Rather than comparing our struggles, we should seek to support and uplift one another, recognizing that we all have unique battles that, when faced with faith, bring us closer to our eternal purpose.

Your personal adversity, no matter how great or small, is a step toward your eternal destiny. It is shaping you for the life God has called you to live and the eternal reward He has prepared for you. Through every trial, remember: you are being refined, drawn nearer to the heart of God, and preparing for the eternal glory that awaits.
